Water capping technology - a proven innovation

We proudly celebrate the 10th anniversary of the transformative Water-Capping Technology for pv-cell manufacturing. The patented RENA Function Layer (RFL) offers an innovative method for covering the upper surface of solar cells during chemical treatment by using a water or liquid layer. This enables that the protected surface remains intact while the treated side is unaffected.

Created during a tightly contested race and ultimately cross-licensed with Gebr. Schmid GmbH. This innovation resulted in improved cell durability, increased yield rates, and optimized production processes. More than 630 RFL technology machines have been deployed globally since their launch.

The RFL continues to be crucial for PERC and TOPCon processes, just as it is in the RENA InEtchSide wet bench even today. RENA Technologies continues to be at the top position of high-precision solar cell production.
